Magna International Inc. reported strong first-quarter 2026 results, with sales increasing 3% to $10.4 billion despite a 7% decline in global light vehicle production. The sales growth was primarily driven by the net strengthening of foreign currencies against the U.S. dollar, which added $520 million, and the launch of new programs. These gains were partially offset by lower production volumes, end-of-life programs, lower complete vehicle assembly volumes, and net customer price concessions.
Adjusted EBIT surged 58% to $558 million, with Adjusted EBIT margin expanding 190 basis points to 5.4%. The improvement was driven by productivity and efficiency gains from operational excellence initiatives and prior restructuring actions, higher equity income (including a favorable commercial item in Power & Vision), lower warranty costs, net transactional foreign exchange gains, and favorable currency translation. These were partially offset by higher net tariff costs, reduced earnings on lower local currency sales, and unfavorable product mix.
On a GAAP basis, income from operations before income taxes fell 61% to $87 million, primarily due to a $485 million loss on assets held for sale related to the announced dispositions of the Lighting and Rooftop Systems businesses within Power & Vision. Excluding this loss and amortization of acquired intangibles, income from operations before income taxes increased 71%.
Net loss attributable to Magna was $12 million, or a diluted loss of $0.04 per share, compared to net income of $146 million, or $0.52 per share, in the prior year. Adjusted EPS rose 77% to $1.38, reflecting higher Adjusted EBIT and share repurchases.
Magna generated $677 million in cash from operations and $372 million in free cash flow, which included balance sheet-related customer recoveries for contract adjustments on certain EV programs. The company returned $575 million to shareholders through $440 million in share repurchases and $135 million in dividends. As of March 31, 2026, 16.7 million shares remained available for repurchase under the current NCIB.
Management maintained a largely unchanged positive outlook for 2026, with total sales guided at $41.5-$43.1 billion, Adjusted EBIT margin of 6.0%-6.6%, Adjusted EPS of $6.25-$7.25, and free cash flow of $1.6-$1.8 billion. CEO Swamy Kotagiri commented, 'We delivered a strong start to 2026, driven by disciplined execution, margin expansion and robust free cash flow generation.'
