China Yuchai International Limited, through its subsidiary Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company Limited, announced the introduction of its first high-pressure, direct-injection internal combustion engine capable of operating entirely on ammonia, designed for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. This represents a historic breakthrough in the company's low- and zero-carbon power research initiatives, which previously included hydrogen and methanol propulsion. The engine integrates a high-pressure ammonia-to-hydrogen generation system with high-pressure direct injection of liquid ammonia ignited via a pre-chamber jet, achieving thermal efficiency on par with the highest levels of heavy-duty diesel engines. This innovation provides a new zero-carbon power solution for heavy-duty, long-haul commercial vehicles, balancing low total lifecycle costs with carbon emission reduction. President Weng Ming Hoh emphasized that this breakthrough broadens the company's technology foundation and supports China's 'Dual Carbon' strategic goals. The company reported selling 461,309 engines in 2025 with total revenue of RMB 24.6 billion. This product launch positions Yuchai as a leader in alternative fuel powertrain solutions, potentially capturing market share in the growing zero-emission commercial vehicle segment.
