SEC filingRevenue surged 88% on AI server demand, but mix shift compressed gross margin; operating income up 214%.
For the first quarter of Fiscal 2027 (ended May 1, 2026), Dell Technologies reported exceptional results driven by surging demand for AI-optimized servers. Total net revenue reached $43.8 billion, up 88% year-over-year, with product revenue rising 117% to $38.1 billion and services revenue declining 1% to $5.7 billion. Gross margin increased 58% to $7.8 billion, but gross margin rate fell 330 basis points to 17.8%, primarily due to a mix shift toward lower-margin AI server sales. Operating income soared 214% to $3.7 billion, with operating margin expanding 330 bps to 8.3%, benefiting from strong operating leverage as operating expenses grew only 9% on a revenue base that nearly doubled. Net income surged 256% to $3.4 billion, and diluted EPS rose to $5.24 from $1.37. Non-GAAP operating income grew 154% to $4.2 billion (9.7% of revenue), and non-GAAP net income rose 194% to $3.2 billion.
The Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) was the standout, with revenue up 181% to $29.0 billion, driven by a 757% surge in AI-optimized servers to $16.1 billion. Traditional servers and networking rose 92% to $8.5 billion, and storage grew 8% to $4.3 billion. ISG operating income increased 206% to $3.1 billion, with margin expanding 80 bps to 10.5%, despite gross margin pressure from AI server mix. The Client Solutions Group (CSG) posted 17% revenue growth to $14.6 billion, led by commercial offerings up 18% and consumer up 9%. CSG operating income rose 79% to $1.2 billion, with margin improving 280 bps to 8.0% due to disciplined pricing and cost leverage. Corporate and other revenue declined as VMware resale wound down.
Management expects full-year Fiscal 2027 to see significant ISG and strong CSG net revenue growth, driven by continued AI adoption and the PC refresh cycle. However, gross margin rate is expected to remain under pressure from the ongoing shift toward AI-optimized servers and elevated component costs. Operating expenses will be managed tightly through targeted reductions and automation, with the goal of scaling opex while investing strategically. The company highlighted robust demand and a growing backlog for AI servers, but noted supply constraints and component inflation as near-term challenges. Free cash flow of $3.1 billion in Q1 reflects strong operating cash generation, partly offset by working capital investments to support AI server growth.
Cash and cash equivalents stood at $11.6B, with restricted cash of $0.2B. Total debt (carrying value) was $31.2B, composed of $7.6B short-term and $23.6B long-term. Shareholders' equity remained negative at -$1.4B, though improved from -$2.5B at year-end, driven by net income partially offset by buybacks and dividends. Inventories rose to $15.1B from $10.4B, reflecting buildup to support AI server demand. The allowance for financing receivables was $212M against gross receivables of $14.0B.
Total purchase obligations (non-cancelable supplier and service commitments) were $20.8B, with $16.9B due within the next nine months. The supply chain finance program had $3.1B of confirmed invoices in accounts payable. Remaining performance obligations (RPO) were approximately $97B, with 80% expected to be recognized in the next 12 months.
ISG revenue surged 181% YoY to $29.0B, with AI-optimized servers alone contributing $16.1B (from $1.9B a year ago). Traditional servers & networking rose to $8.5B, storage to $4.3B. CSG revenue grew 16.8% to $14.6B, with commercial up 18% and consumer up 9%. Segment operating margins: ISG 10.5% (up from 9.7%), CSG 8.0% (up from 5.2%). Corporate and other revenue declined to $0.2B due to VMware resale termination.
